We are doing a little bit of construction work on our house. Sand is usually delivered in an old dump truck. Today it came in a cart pulled by three horses. I see this guy working around our neighbourhood all the time. His cart holds exactly one square meter of sand. He used to dig it himself down by the river just a few blocks from here. The mayor of Córdoba recently put a stop to that and now he gets the sand at a quarry about a kilometre form here.
He told me the wagon belonged to his dad and that it is at the very least 60 years old. He guesses the wheels may be one hundred years old. The hubs are made of cast iron.
You still see these horse carts around in the city but most are used to scavenge for garbage. Most of these have wheels and axles from old pickup trucks so they don’t ride right. The man in the picture fixes the wooden wheels himself. The man told me proudly that his wagon was the last of its kind. That is not quite the literal truth but it is close enough to merit a picture.
